Phone Consultation for Primary Care Providers 

CAPP phone consults offer real-time, patient specific support through a phone consultation with a child and adolescent psychiatrist to primary care providers (PCP) who need advice for patients with behavioral health concerns.  

Our child and adolescent psychiatrist will discuss the case with you in real time which will result in one of the following outcomes, depending on the case:

  • Directly answer PCP’s questions 
  • Offer guidance on screening, assessment, and diagnosis 
  • Guidance on medication management 
  • Provide assistance in treatment planning, resources 
  • Assistance with any general question related to child psychiatry, behavioral health, or community resources 

 

Primary Care Provider Consults

Step 1. Contact us

  • Primary care provider will contact us 
  • Our office staff will obtain basic demographic information  

 

 

 

 

 

Step 2. Provider-to-provider phone consultation

  • Child and adolescent psychiatrist will call primary care provider back promptly for a real-time phone consultation  

 


Step 3. Send consult letter

  • CAPP will send the primary care provider a brief consult letter via email or fax

 

 

 

 

Second-step Psychologist Consultation for Families

After initial consultation, patients and families may access a one-time consultation with a UCSF psychologist through the UCSF CAPP Second-step Psychologist Consultation.  

 

The second-step psychologist consult is:  

  • A one-time opportunity for families to speak directly to a knowledgeable psychologist for clarification of underlying behavioral and mental health concerns, parent guidance on behaviors and navigating next steps 

 

This consultation does not include:  

  • A comprehensive psychological evaluation or testing for your child  
  • A definitive diagnosis  
  • Long-term therapy for your child or family  
  • Guaranteed linkage to services  
  • Emergency evaluation for urgent or life-threatening situations

Step 2. Provider-to-provider phone consultation

 

  • Child and adolescent psychiatrist will call primary care provider back promptly for a real-time phone consultation 
  • If case deemed appropriate for Second-step Psychologist Consult, CAPP team will provide further information regarding scheduling to primary care provider

 

Step 3. Psychologist-to-family consultation

 

  •  Once family receives a referral from their primary care provider, they should contact us to schedule a Second-step Psychologist Consult with a psychologist during office hours 
  • Family will speak with Second-step psychologist via phone or Zoom 

 

 

Step 4. Send consult letter

  • CAPP will send the primary care provider a brief consult letter via fax or email
