Reach Out & Connect (ROC) Consult

COMING SOON: PCPs will be able to consult directly with a UCSF psychologist. The 'Reach Out and Connect' program is an opportunity for PCPs to collaborate with a therapist on how to best meet the needs of their pediatric patient. Our psychologists have earned doctoral degrees (PhD/PsyD) and have specialized training in the assessment and treatment of pediatric mental health conditions. They may do more in-depth evaluation to identify treatment needs and develop treatment plans. They cannot help decide if medication can be part of the treatment plan.

The ROC Consult Is:

  • A one-time opportunity to speak directly to a knowledgeable psychologist for clarification of underlying behavioral and mental health concerns, to help provide guidance to parents on behaviors, and to navigate next steps.

This consultation does not include:

  • A comprehensive psychological evaluation or testing for the child
  • A definitive diagnosis
  • Therapy for the child or family
  • Guaranteed linkage to services
  • Emergency evaluation for urgent or life-threatening situations

Since the program’s inception, our psychologists have addressed a variety of issues, such as:

  • How can I help the toddler who doesn’t want to interact with anyone else but the parent?
  • Why is this 5 year-old child suddenly hitting after previously doing well in preschool?
  • Is this child suffering from OCD and what can I do to help?
  • This child is struggling with an eating disorder and I want to know how to help them and how to look for quality treatment.
  • This child’s teacher is complaining that she isn’t paying attention in class and has many missing assignments; the parent is wondering what to do next.
  • How do I support this teen who appears depressed and won’t leave his room or do the things he used to enjoy?
  • This child is anxious about going to school and each morning is a struggle to get out the door.
  • This teen is finally open to talking to someone about her anxiety; I don’t know where to start getting her support or what I should be looking for.
  • This family experienced a traumatic event and I’m worried about how it impacted the child.
