UCSF Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Portal (CAPP) | The CAPP Core Curriculum

• Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) diagnosis and management, including behavioral strategies and stimulant and non-stimulant medications for ADHD
• Pediatric anxiety disorders diagnosis and management
• Pediatric depressive disorders diagnosis and management
• Guidance for safely initiating and monitoring selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) for anxiety/depression
• Suicidal ideation (SI): Best practices for SI screening, risk assessment, triage, and follow-up care within primary care contexts
• Autism spectrum disorders (ASD): Recognition of red flags that should trigger diagnostic evaluation, and evidence-based evaluation and treatment components for children with suspected or known ASD, managing common comorbidities and guidance on services navigation 

Project ECHO: Each year, CAPP Project ECHO (for medical providers) will offer the Core series covering the above topics in six consecutive, live monthly sessions occurring virtually on Zoom. Each session starts with a brief (20-25 minute) didactic presentation on the topic followed by a case discussion related to the day’s topic. Participants desiring MOC Part 2 credit and/or CAPP Core certification can either share a case or pass a CME quiz with a score of >=70%.

This core curriculum will be made available in a variety of formats:

• Monthly webinars: The first 6 monthly webinars of each academic year will review the above topics, followed by a CME quiz for those desiring MOC Part 2 credit and formal CAPP Core certification.
• Asynchronous, on-demand, web-based (enduring) CME activity: Participants can view lecture recordings online at their own convenience and pass CME quizzes (scoring >=70%).
• Live bootcamps: Periodically, CAPP plans to host regional, day-long, in-person bootcamps (with 6 hours of content) covering the core curriculum, offering a post-activity CME quiz for those desiring MOC Part 2 credit and CAPP Core certification.

In addition to completing didactic learning and CME quizzes, participants are encouraged to consult CAPP at least twice within 6 months of completing their didactic training, as the learning module content is greatly enhanced through application in practice.  Any participant who completes all 6 modules (in the same modality) and passes the CME quiz will be eligible for “CAPP Core” certification.

CME/MOC Credit for PCPs: These activities are eligible for AMA Category 1 CME credit and (for those passing post-quizzes or presenting in ECHO case-based discussions) American Board of Pediatrics (ABP) Maintenance of Certification (MOC) Part 2 credit, commensurate with the level of participation in the activities.

• Improvement of individual and systemic performance in pediatric healthcare quality metrics pertaining to behavioral health: As CAPP and this CME program grow, we anticipate that clinics and health systems will recognize and value the higher level of competency in pediatric mental health represented by this rigorous training. This certification indicates basic proficiency with the most commonly presenting pediatric mental health conditions that PCPs may be expected to initially address within primary care, and may bolster PCP’s hiring and advancement prospects, particularly in health systems seeking to improve their performance in pediatric behavioral health metrics.
• Payers are encouraged to waive prior authorization requirements for psychotropic medications for PCPs who have completed this training and/or consulted CAPP about the patient.

There would be no cost to live Project ECHO or webinar participants for participation or CME credit/certification.

• Participants utilizing the asynchronous option (recordings + quiz) who desire CME credit and formal certification can receive their CME certificate at no charge.
